Merchant is a supporting character in Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance. He is a very mysterious character. Initially, his first shop is sealed behind a giant boulder. The player must knock a large armored enemy down stairs to crash through the boulder in order to open the path. It is not explained how the Merchant got trapped there, whether or not he was even trapped, or how he is able to survive in the castle. What is even more baffling is that there are several different locations where the Merchant can appear. It is not clarified how he transports his entire booth through the castle unharmed.
The Merchant serves the purpose of a gameplay feature more than he does that of a logical character. He sells items, goods, leggings, head gear, body gear, and maps. Unlike shop keepers in many other Castlevania games, he does not buy equipment and items. He will only purchase special jewels.
The Merchant has eight different shops spread throughout both castles; each has its own unique stock of goods. To ensure that the Merchant shows up at one of his designated spots, certain conditions must sometimes be met, such as having an even number of hearts, being at level fifty or higher, or having the Noon Star item in the inventory.
Story
Events of Harmony of Dissonance
While on one of his travels, Merchant found himself enveloped in a thick blanket of fog and unable to find his way. He eventually found himself at Dracula's Castle. Unable to find an exit, he did the only thing he felt he could, which was set up his shop within the walls of the castle.
The vampire hunter, Juste Belmont, found the Merchant's shop in the Castle Treasury. Juste discussed things with the man, such as why he set his shop up in such a place. The Merchant explained his situation and offered to sell Juste his goods on a number of occasions at various shops of his.
