Story
Before Castlevania
Hugh's father, Morris, engaged in a confrontation with Count Dracula in the year 1820, in which Morris successfully sealed Dracula away, but at the cost of two of his compatriots' lives who had a son together, Nathan. Because both the boy's parents were killed, Morris Baldwin took him in and raised him alongside Hugh, training them both to become vampire hunters. Hugh always proved superior to Nathan in training, besting his sparring partner every time. Despite that, when it was time for Morris to choose a successor to wield the Hunter Whip, he chose Nathan instead of Hugh. Hugh became resentful of that decision, and of Nathan, who he viewed as inferior.
Events of Circle of the Moon
Upon learning that Carmilla was planning the resurrection of Count Dracula in an Austrian castle in 1830, Hugh, Nathan, and Morris rushed to the aged stronghold to prevent the Dark Lord's reawakening. They were too late; the Count was already revived as they entered the castle. Dracula sent the two trainees down a long, dark abyss beneath the castle while he captured Morris, planning to harvest the master hunter's life force to fully regain his powers.
After landing in the abyss, Hugh arrogantly and rudely brushed Nathan's assistance aside and rushed ahead alone to save his father. He wanted to be the one to slay Count Dracula to prove that his father's decision was wrong, and to win further glory beyond that. He felt he could do it by himself, without the Hunter Whip and without Nathan Graves.
During his adventure, Hugh encountered Nathan in the castle a number of times. Nathan was searching for Morris as well, and Hugh felt Nathan was trying to steal his glory. Hugh continually berated Nathan, especially when Nathan defeated a creature that was too powerful for Hugh.
Eventually, Hugh came into contact with Carmilla and Count Dracula again, and they seduced him to their side by exploiting his deep rooted insecurities. Hugh got to the point where he was ready to kill Nathan to prove himself, and challenged his former compatriot to a life or death duel. Hugh was defeated by Nathan for the first time, which cleansed his mind of the influence the vampires had on it. Hugh apologized for all he did, realizing that his sour attitude was what kept him from being his father's successor. He pleaded with Nathan to save Morris' life.
As Nathan challenged Dracula in the chamber where Morris was held, Hugh entered and took his father to safety. After Nathan destroyed Dracula and the castle crumbled, Hugh admitted to his foolhardy mistakes, and decided that he must begin his training anew under his father's guidance.
