Story

Before Castlevania

Albus was apparently taken in at the same time as Shanoa, by Barlowe. The two were raised and trained together until the time that Barlowe deduced only Shanoa was capable of hosting Dominus. But Albus refused to believe that, and asked Barlowe to let him be the bearer instead.

Events of Order of Ecclesia

Barlowe accepted Albus' offer. One day, when Albus came back to the Ecclesia headquarters for a short visit, he learned through Shanoa that Barlowe sent him on a mission just to hold the the ritual to grant Shanoa Dominus in his absence. Albus was angered at Barlowe's betrayal. Just as Shanoa was about to absorb the glyphs, Albus interrupted the ritual, and at that moment, Shanoa collapsed. He then exchanged words with Barlowe, asking why he was betrayed. Barlowe told him that he knew well how only Shanoa could host the glyph. Albus told him that he intended to overcome his weakness. Barlowe tried to calm Albus down by saying that they still had time to work together and maybe even overcome this setback, but Albus decided that it was too late and stole the Dominus glyphs.

Barlowe was shocked. He told Albus not to act foolishly, and asked him what he intended to do with Dominus. Albus replied that Barlowe had shown what must be his, like a fine master. Barlowe then told Albus to do his part of the mission, but Albus said that he had his own mission and pointed Agartha at his old master. Barlowe dashed back and they both shot glyphs at each other; the glyphs collided and Albus bid farewell, stating that Barlowe was no longer his master, and escaped.

Afterward, Albus discovered a village named Wygol, and used his knowledge of glyphs to abduct many of the residents against their will. He then fled to a Monastery where Shanoa found him two weeks later. Albus greeted her excitedly, asking if she was still slaving away for Barlowe. Shanoa recognized him as Albus, and told him that she was there by order of her master to retrieve Dominus and return Albus home. Albus denied that he had any home and told Shanoa that Barlowe himself saw to that. She told Albus that it wasn't a request and then attacked. Albus teleported out of the way in time, however, and was intrigued by Shanoa's lack of skill and grace. Shanoa blamed it on Albus, to which he sarcastically remarked about it. He also told Shanoa to tell Barlowe that he was never coming back. Shanoa tried to coerce Albus again and once the name "Barlowe" escaped from her lips, Albus became enraged and yelled at Shanoa, telling her to never utter that name again. He then shot at Shanoa with Agartha, but Shanoa ducked underneath. He then told her to take care of herself and went away, leaving an obvious trail behind him in the form of a map.

Shanoa followed Albus to the Prison Island's lower levels. He found Shanoa's progress impressive and told her that it was fortunate he had already prepared a reward for her. He held out his hand and a piece of Dominus appeared; he told Shanoa to absorb it. She did so and discovered that it really was Dominus.

She asked Albus what he was thinking. Albus told her that it was impossible to conceal the source of Dominus with that much power, which resulted in Shanoa being confused, asking Albus what he meant. Albus told her that what it means is that he is right. Shanoa then told Albus to come back to Ecclesia, as that was his last chance. Albus remarked that they'd been through that and he was not the old man's (Barlowe's) errand boy any more. He then teleported away. Shanoa met with him another time in the Skeleton Cave, seeing him with an imprisoned villager from Wygol. She demanded that he let the villager go, and Albus accepted, as he was about to finished with the villager. He disappeared again.

The two crossed paths again in the mansion, Giant's Dwelling. Albus was fascinated by Shanoa's ingenuity at finding him again. Shanoa told him that even a blind man would be able to find him, because of the trail he left. Albus likened this to the days of their childhood. He said that he would let Shanoa win in a game of tag whenever she cried. Shanoa asked what he was getting at, and Albus replied that if she cried, he might give himself up. Shanoa told Albus that he knew she couldn't cry any more as an effect of Albus interrupting the Dominus ritual, and Albus apologized, telling her that if she won't cry, then he won't be giving up. But, he said it would be a shame to let her go empty-handed, so he materialized another piece of Dominus and allowed Shanoa to absorb it.

He asked if Shanoa knew what Dominus was and Shanoa told him that it's the ultimate glyph, capable of destroying Dracula. Albus told her that she was half-right. He then asked Shanoa if she knew what Dominus was created from, stating that nothing is made from nothing. Shanoa asked, and Albus told her that it's made from Dracula's remains and that Dominus is Dracula's power, nothing less. Shanoa refused to believe and Albus told her to ask Barlowe if she didn't trust his word. Albus also told her to be quick about it, as he was nearly done with his plan.

Shanoa entered a chapel at Oblivion Ridge but was quickly encased by a Torpor glyph from Albus. Albus told her to relax and not to interfere any more. He then materialized the final piece of Dominus and absorbed it himself. Shanoa, horrified, realized that Albus had let her absorb the other glyphs to see how it was done, so that he could take the last piece himself. Albus then clutched his head for a moment and slumped forward. He was about to tell Shanoa more, but then realized that he was being consumed by Dracula and driven mad. He told Shanoa that they would settle their matters later and teleported away.

Albus retreated to his base at Mystery Manor. He was insane from having absorbed the final piece of Dominus, and that his how Shanoa found him. It was then her mission to kill Albus, which she did in a battle. When Albus perished, he relinquished the final piece of Dominus, which also contained his memories. From absorbing the last piece, and thereby gaining access to Albus' memories, Shanoa learned that using Dominus would end the life of the user. Albus had been on a quest to save Shanoa's life by bearing the burden of Dominus himself, which Barlowe promised him he would do. Albus' plan was to use the blood of the villagers from Wygol, who were in truth descendants of the Belmont Clan of Vampire Hunters, to counteract the effects of Dominus to save himself, but it did not work.

Shanoa learned the truth, and that Barlowe was in fact the deceiver, as he never told Shanoa that using Dominus would kill her. Because Dominus required only one life, Shanoa was able to use it to defeat Dracula without dying. Though it cost him his life, Albus fulfilled his promise of protecting Shanoa by sacrificing himself so that she may live.
